Vitamin May Help Alcohol-Damaged Babies:
Study
(Washington, Reuters Health, 3/1/07)
Jennifer Thomas, and team at San Diego State University,
gave the mothers of 170 rats alcohol. Predictably the
offspring had learning deficits and were hyperactive, but
those that were then given choline improved. Scientists
speculate that choline may benefit children with fetal
alcohol spectrum disorders by helping their brain cells
develop and facilitating the manufacture of acetylcholine, a
neurotransmitter. These findings also suggest that women
should consume choline while pregnant.
