Uric Acid Blood Check a Marker for Dementia
(HealthDay News, 1/2/07)

David Schretlen and team at Johns Hopkins and Yale University medical schools examined 96 older adults, using a blood test to determine their uric acid levels and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale plus other standard neuropsychological tests to assess cognitive function. The investigators found that subjects whose uric acid tested in the high-normal range had the lowest scores for “mental processing speed, verbal memory and working memory.” These findings suggest that high uric acid levels may predict cognitive impairment and that reducing these levels may help slow mental decline.
