Texas Study Finds Link Between Pollution, Cancer
(Houston, Reuters Health, 1/19/07)

Ann Coker of the University of Texas School of Public Health, and colleagues, report that living near Houston’s refinery row along the city’s ship channel raises the risk of developing childhood leukemia. According to their study, living within two miles of the elevated levels of 1,3-butadiene surrounding the ship channel's refineries raises the risk by 56 % compared to living more than 10 miles away. Houston’s mayor, Bill White, said the results mean that reducing the hazardous petrochemical air pollution must be a high priority.
