Stomach Meds Tied to Mental Slowing in
Seniors
(NY, Reuters Health, 8/6/07)
Dr. Malaz Boustani of Indiana University in Indianapolis,
and team, assessed cognitive functioning in 1558 African
American seniors, who had normal mental abilities at the
outset. The investigators found that subjects who took
histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2As)—like Zantac and
Pepcid—for excessive stomach acid, had twice the likelihood
of becoming cognitively impaired. These findings suggest
that H2As may contribute to cognitive decline in the
elderly.
