Spearmint Tea May Help Women With Hirsutism
(HealthDay News, 2/21/07)

Mehmet Numan Tamer of Suleyman Demirel University in Isparta, Turkey reports that spearmint tea may help women with hirsutism, a condition characterized by excess facial and bodily hair presumably caused by high levels of male hormones. The investigators assigned 21 women with hirsutism to drink two cups of spearmint tea daily for five days at a specific time in their menstrual cycle. The researchers found that the women showed a decrease in free (circulating) testosterone and an increase in several female hormones, but no decrease in total testosterone. It was not clear whether the excess hair growth actually diminished.
