Selenium Loss Linked to Cognitive Decline in Aged
(NY, Reuters Health, 2/1/07)

Dr. N. Tasnime Akbaraly, of Universite Montpellier, and team, recruited 1,389 French seniors in1991 and 1993, 703 of whom completed the 9-year study, which had 6 follow-ups. The researchers recorded the subjects’ social and demographic information and administered tests that measured cognitive function (i.e. information processing capabilities). The investigators found that participants whose selenium levels dropped the most over time had the greatest risk of cognitive decline. The scientists speculate that selenium, an antioxidant, may protect cognitive function in seniors by fighting oxidative stress.
