Parkinson's Drug Pulled from US Market
(AFP, 3/30/07)
The FDA announced that the manufacturers of the
Parkinson's drug pergolide, marketed as Permax and in two
generic forms, will stop selling it in the US based on
evidence that demonstrate that it significantly raises the
risk of heart valve damage. Two studies in the New England
Journal of Medicine confirm previous findings linking
pergolide to a condition known as valve regurgitation, where
the valves do not close tightly enough to block the backflow
of blood. The FDA advised patients to contact their doctors
and not just abruptly discontinue the medication. |
