Venom Protein May Lead to Brain Cancer
Cure- Study
(Washington, Reuters, 7/28/06)
Dr. Adam Mamelak, and team, injected a mixture of
radioactive iodine and TM-601, a synthetic version of a
scorpion venom protein, into the brains of 18 patients who had
undergone surgery to remove malignant brain tumors. The
investigators found that the solution targeted remaining
malignant cells without harming surrounding tissue. The
researchers report that two of the study subjects were still
living nearly three years after the treatment; an atypical
outcome for patients whose life expectancy is usually a matter
of months. These results support the findings of animal
experiments that show that TM-601 may block tumor growth even
without the radioactive component.
