Study Links Pesticides with Parkinson's
(Reuters Health, 6/26/06)

Alberto Ascherio and colleagues at the Harvard School of Public Health analyzed the results of a 2001 American Cancer Society survey of 143,325 people. After contacting participants who noted a Parkinson's diagnosis, the researchers concluded that farmers, ranchers, fisherman and other people with long-term, low-level exposure to pesticides were 70 % more likely to develop this condition than those who had minimal exposure to such chemicals. These findings suggest that exposure to pesticides is a risk factor for Parkinson’s, a disease marked by the death of brain cells.
