Soy Benefits Heart Health in Healthy
Young Men
(NY Reuters Health, 2/28/06)
Alison Duncan of the University of Guelph in Ontario,
Canada, and team, gave 35 healthy young men either milk
proteins, low-isoflavone soy proteins or high-isoflavone soy
for eight-week periods. The team assigned the supplements in
random order, separating each 8-week period by a one-month
break. The investigators measured blood levels of various
lipids and found that the ratios of total cholesterol to HDL
("good") cholesterol and LDL ("bad") cholesterol to HDL were
lower when subjects were taking either soy supplement, as
compared to the milk protein. The scientists concluded that
soy proteins reduce lipid levels; although isoflavones
apparently do not affect the results.
