Scientists May Have Found Meat Link to
Colon Cancer
Reuters, 2/1/06
Professor Sheila Bingham of the Medical Research Council
Dunn Nutrition Unit in Cambridge, England, and team, studied
colon cells from participants who ate a diet of red meat, no
meat, high red meat or high fiber for 15 days. The
investigators found a link between consuming red meat and
higher levels of the DNA-altering substances, N-nitroso
compounds, in the large intestine. Bingham explained that
dietary fiber may help the body repair the DNA damage, but if
it doesn't, cancer can develop. These findings suggest that
cutting down on meat consumption may help prevent colon
cancer.
