Many Women Unaware They're Pre-diabetic
(AP, 9/28/06)
Since the symptoms of high blood sugar and insulin
resistance may not be obvious, people are often unaware that
their bodies are headed for diabetes and/or heart disease.
Experts are trying to raise public awareness that lifestyle
modifications, including healthy eating and regular exercise,
can avert these deadly conditions. The Women's Resource Center
of Red Bank, NJ, recently launched a campaign to educate women aged 40 to 65 about the risks and remedies for
uncontrolled blood sugar, explaining on its website how to
maintain a healthy blood sugar level and the
harm that will occur if you don't. Lalita Kaul of the American Dietetic
Association addresses the problem by recommending the
following measures: “eating at least five servings of
fruits and vegetables daily; cutting down on sugar and
desserts while eating more whole grains; eating less saturated
fat and using healthier cooking oils; eating salmon and other
fish rich in essential fatty acids a few times a week; and
avoiding prepared foods high in sodium…” |
