Study: Low-Calorie Diet Keeps Heart Young
(St. Louis, Associated Press, 1/13/06)
Dr. John O. Holloszy and Dr. Luigi Fontana of Washington
University in St. Louis, and team, compared the cardiac
function of 25 members of the “Caloric Restriction Society”
with an equal number of people who regularly consume a typical
Western Diet. When the investigators performed ultrasound
exams, they found that the hearts of the subjects who limited
their caloric intake appeared to be "younger" and "more
elastic.". This association between eating a low-calorie diet
and slower aging of the heart suggests that consuming
low-calorie, nutrient-dense foods may promote heart health.
