Lifestyle Affects the Brain as Well as the Heart
(NY, Reuters Health, 3/2/06)

Dr. Hugh C. Hendrie of the Indiana University Center for Aging Research in Indianapolis, and team, reviewed 96 analyses of 26 large North American and European studies that tracked the cognitive and emotional health of older adults. The investigators found that controllable lifestyle factors, like exercise and intellectual stimulation, that benefit the heart, may also protect the aging brain from cognitive decline and dementia. The scientists speculate that adopting healthy heart habits—like exercising, eating a healthy diet and controlling high blood pressure—may protect mental health as well.
