Study Finds Exercise Helps Delay Dementia
(Philadelphia, Associated Press, 1/17/06)
Dr. Wayne McCormick of the University of Washington, and
colleagues, followed 1,740 older adults from 1994 to 2003.
Every two years for six years, the investigators assessed the
health of the participants, all of whom had shown no signs of
dementia at the outset. The researchers found that subjects
who exercised three or more times weekly are less likely to
develop dementia. The scientists note that even light
exercise, like walking, seemed to have a positive effect.
These findings suggest that physical activity protects the
functioning of the mind.
