Whole Grains and Fish May Protect Against
Asthma
(Reuters, 12/11/06)
As part of the International Study on Allergy and Asthma in
Childhood 2 (ISAAC-2), Dr. H. A. Smit, of the National
Institute of Public Health and the Environment, in Bilthoven,
the Netherlands, and team, had the parents of 598 Dutch
children fill out a dietary questionnaire, which the
investigators then used to estimate each child’s intake of
certain foods, including fish and whole grains. The
researchers matched the resultant data against whether the
children experienced wheezing or asthma as determined by
medical questionnaires and tests. The scientists found that
children who consumed greater amounts of fish and whole grains
had a smaller risk of wheezing or having asthma.
