Vitamin B6 May Cut Risk of Parkinson's
Disease
(NY, Reuters Health, 8/1/06)
Dr. Monique M. B. Breteler of Erasmus Medical Center in
Rotterdam, and team, tracked 5,289 older adults who were
initially free of Parkinson’s disease. The investigators found
that those who reported eating diets that contained the most
vitamin B6 had about half the risk of developing Parkinson's
disease as those whose diets contained the least. Vitamin B6,
which is found in both meat and vegetables and is needed for
proper protein metabolism and immune and nervous system
function, Scientists speculate that consuming more foods rich
in this nutrient may reduce the risk of Parkinson's disease by
protecting brain cells from free radical damage; however, the
correlation seen in this study may apply specifically to
smokers.
