Vegan Diet Reverses Diabetes Symptoms,
Study Finds
(Washington, Reuters Health, 7/27/06)
Dr. Neal Barnard of the Physician's Committee for
Responsible Medicine, and colleagues at George Washington
University, the University of Toronto and the University of
North Carolina, randomly assigned 99 type-2 diabetics to
either a low-fat, low-sugar vegan diet or the standard
American Diabetes Association diet. After 22 weeks, 43%t of
the vegan group and 26% of the standard dieters either lowered
the doses or stopped some of their drugs. Both groups showed
overall positive changes, but comparatively, the vegans
weight, blood sugar, cholesterol and kidney function improved
more. These findings suggest that the vegan diet may be an
effective alternate treatment to type-2 diabetes.
