United States Seen Lagging on Stem Cell
Research
(London, Reuters Health, 6/1/06)
Colorado Democrat Rep. Diana DeGette and other members of a
bipartisan Congressional delegation are meeting with
officials, agencies and scientists in Britain to explore
issues related to stem cell research. The delegates report
that America’s restrictive policies are causing the US to lose
research and investment opportunities and forcing some
scientists to move abroad. DeGette and Delaware Republican
Rep. Michael Castle have introduced a bill to increase funding
for “stem cell research on human embryos that would otherwise
be discarded,” but President Bush threatens to veto it. So
while stem cell research shows tremendous promise in treating
severe diseases, some factions continue to block it, claiming
that it violates the sanctity of human life. |
