Tomatoes, Carrots, Greens May Lower
Asthma Risk
(NY, Reuters Health, 3/19/06)
Dr Isabelle Romieu of the National Institute of Public
Health in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and team, reviewed health data
from surveys of nearly 69,000 French women. The investigators
found that participants who ate the most carrots, tomatoes and
leafy vegetables were less likely to have asthma than those
who ate the least. Scientists speculate that the carotenoids
in certain vegetables may protect against this lung condition
because the body converts them into vitamin A, which helps
regulate the immune system and maintain the respiratory tract
lining.
