Study: Tofu, Oatmeal Lower Cholesterol
(Toronto, The Associated Press, 3/15/06)

Dr. David Jenkins and Dr. Cyril Kendall, both of the University of Toronto, prescribed a regimen that itemized specific foods—including raw almonds, tofu, oatmeal, barley and eggplant—to 55 middle-aged adults who had high cholesterol and were already eating a generally heart-healthy diet. The group who stuck faithfully to this very restrictive “Portfolio Eating Plan” for a year reduced their cholesterol by about 29%, a rate comparable to the results patients achieved in studies that used statin drugs. Those subjects not following the diet as strictly still lowered their cholesterol by 10 to 20 %; while those who did not adhere to the diet showed no change in cholesterol levels.
