Soy May Prevent Breast Cancer, Study
Finds
(Washington, Reuters, April 5, 2006)
Leena Hilakivi-Clarke of Georgetown University and
colleagues at Georgetown in Washington and Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore reviewed 18 separate studies of soy
and breast cancer. The investigators concluded that Causcasian
women who ate soy had a 14% reduction in breast cancer risk,
but the researchers did not determine whether the benefit came
from the soy or from other healthful habits; nor whether
taking supplements has the same effect as eating actual soy
foods. Scientists speculate that the isolflavones in soy may
promote the destruction of malignant cells by blocking
estrogens.
