Researchers Map Out Early Steps to
Alzheimer's
(HealthDay News, 7/17/06)
Dr. Ron Petersen of the Mayo Clinic, and team, tracked 354
adults who, at the outset, had mild cognitive impairment,
which may precede Alzheimer's. Over the course of about 3
years, the investigators routinely tested the subjects for
deterioration of “executive function”—including “staying on
task, concentrating, multitasking, making decisions or paying
attention to several things at once”—as well as language and
visuo-spatial capability. The investigators found that first
of all, participants lost attention capacity and then, as the
participants moved toward dementia, “executive function”
continued to decline.
