Probiotic Yogurt Aids in Eliminating
Ulcer Bug
(NY, Reuters Health, 4/21/06)
Dr. Bor-Shyang Sheu of National Cheng Kung University
Hospital in Taiwan, and team, studied 138 ulcer patients, in
whom triple-antibiotic therapy had failed to eradicate the
Helicobacter pylori bacteria in their stomachs. The
investigators assigned the subjects another course of
antibiotics, but this time some of the participants took daily
doses of “AB yogurt,” which contains the beneficial bacteria,
Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, for the month preceding
treatment. The researchers found that the probiotic
pretreatment group had a significantly greater reduction in H.
pylori than their antibiotics-only peers. These findings
indicate that “good” bacteria is useful in treating H.pylori-related
ulcers.
