Pesticides Found in Most U.S. Rivers
(Washington, AP, 3/4/06)
The US Geological Survey examined data from 51 major river
basins and aquifer systems, as well as a study of an aquifer
system running through eight states from South Dakota to
Texas. It found that, while concentrations of individual
toxins usually fell within EPA drinking-water standards, most
U.S. rivers and streams contain pesticides, often at levels
that could affect fish and the animals that feed on them. In
responses, Jay Feldman of Beyond Pesticides called for
strengthening government policies and curtailing pesticide
use; while Jay Vroom of CropLife America claimed that
pesticides are well regulated and detecting their presence
“does not always mean there is reason for concern.” |
