Military Service may be Connected to ALS
(AP, 11/10/06)

Richard T. Johnson of the Institute of Medicine reports a possible link between military service and developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig;s disease. Three of five studies cited showed greater incidence of ALS among veterans of the 1990-91 Gulf War; one linked it to veterans serving prior to that war; and one did not find any link. The Institute called for more research, concluding that evidence that this degenerative nerve disease is the result of military service is limited at this time.
