Fruit And Vegetable Juice May Ward Off
Alzheimer's
(NY, Reuters Health, 9/5/06)
From 1992 through2001, Dr. Qui Dai of the Vanderbilt
University in Nashville, Tennessee, and team, tracked 1,836
Japanese residents of Washington state, who were dementia-free
at the outset. The researchers found that subjects drinking
juices at least three times a week had a significantly lower
risk of developing dementia compared to those consuming juice
less than once weekly. These findings suggest that fruit and
vegetable juices may help block Alzheimer's, especially in
people genetically predisposed to the disease. The scientists
speculate that the phytonutrients in plant foods may exert
antioxidant effects on reactive oxygen species (ROS), the
harmful byproducts of metabolism, which are thought to
contribute to the development of Alzheimer's disease.
