Exposure to Chemicals May Harm Young
Brains
(London, Reuters Health, 11/7/06)
Philippe Grandjean of Harvard School of Public Health in
Boston and the University of Southern Denmark, warns that few
industrial chemicals are controlled with the goal of
protecting children, despite the reality that many of them may
impair the developing brain. He contends that this
under-regulation puts millions of fetuses and babies at risk
for adverse effects, which include learning and developmental
disorders. Granjean and colleagues called for an expansion of
the regulation of neurotoxins to encompass, not just lead and
mercury, but the hundreds of other chemicals that have been
shown to be toxic to the human brain. |
