Chemicals in Curry, Onions May Shrink
Colon Polyps
(NY, Reuters Health, 8/2/06)
Dr. Francis M. Giardiello of The Johns Hopkins School of
Medicine in Baltimore, and team, gave five patients who had
five or more precancerous colon polyps, 480 mg of curcumin and
20 mg of quercetin three times a day. The investigators report
that after about 6 months, all subjects had fewer polyps that
were smaller in size than at the outset. These findings
suggest that curcumin, an ingredient in curry, and quercetin,
a phytonutrient in onions, may help block colon cancer, The
scientists say that larger studies comparing curcumin and
quercetin with a placebo are needed.
