Body's Response to Drugs, Toxins Varies With Age
(HealthDay News, 2/17/06)

Ronald N. Hines and colleagues at the Medical College of Wisconsin, report that there is a age-related difference in the way that people metabolize drugs and toxins. The scientists say that with age comes significant changes in the types and levels of enzymes present in the body and, depending on the compound and other variables, these enzymes activate and/or, deactivate drugs and environmental chemicals. These findings suggest that healthcare providers must consider these variations when prescribing drugs for young children.
