Australian Study Finds Fish Oil Helps
Weight Loss
(Sydney, Reuters Health, 7/28/06)
Alison Hill of the University of South Australia, and
colleagues, divided 68 overweight and obese people, into four
groups.. They assigned small daily doses of fish oil to one
group and sunflower oil to another. They had both exercise
moderately with a 45-minute walk or run three times a week.
They assigned fish oil or sunflower oil to the other two
groups, but without the exercise. The investigators found that
the group taking fish oil doses and exercising lost an average
of 4.5 pounds over the three months of the study; whereas the
other three groups lost no weight. The scientists speculate
that the omega 3 fatty acids in fish oil may help burn off
excess weight by improving blood flow to the muscles during
exercise. |
