Magnesium Good for Old Bones
(Reuters Health, 12/01/05)

Assessing dietary intake of magnesium using a food frequency questionnaire, Dr. Kathryn M. Ryder of the University of Tennessee, Memphis, and team, compared bone mineral density (BMD) with magnesium intake from diet and supplements in 2038 elderly participants in the Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study. The investigators found a positive correlation between magnesium intake and higher BMD in white subjects. These findings suggest that ingesting magnesium may help prevent osteoporosis. Scientists theorize that magnesium, a component of bone, is essential to proper calcium metabolism and bone strength
