Vitamin E May
Help Ease Menstrual Cramps
(NY, Reuters Health, 4/22/05)
Dr. Saeideh Ziaei of Tarbiat Modarres University in Tehran,
and associates, assigned 278 teenaged girls who had a history
of menstrual cramps to take either a placebo or 200 mg of
vitamin E twice daily beginning two days before menstruation
and continuing through the third day of their periods. The
subjects were permitted to take the pain medication,
ibuprofen, when needed. After four months, the subjects taking
vitamin E reported having just two hours of cramps during
their periods, whereas the placebo group averaged 17 hours. In
addition, only 4 % of those taking Vitamin E reporting taking
ibuprofen, compared with 89 % of the placebo group.
