Vitamin B6
May Reduce Colon Cancer Risk in Women
(NY, Reuters Health, 6/13/05)
Dr. Susanna C. Larsson of the Karolinska Institute in
Stockholm, and team, analyzed data gathered from 61,433 women
who participated in the Swedish Mammography Cohort for an
average of about 15 years. The researchers found an increased
colorectal cancer rate for subjects whose diets were lowest in
Vitamin B6. Participants with the lowest level of vitamin B6
intake were 34 % likelier to develop colorectal cancer than
those with the highest and, among women who drank more than
one alcoholic drink weekly, those with the lowest B6 intake
were 72% likelier to develop colorectal cancer than those with
the highest. The scientists speculate that insufficient
vitamin B6 status may promote the development of cancerous
polyps in the colon.
