Supplement May Slow Marker of Prostate
Cancer
(NY, Reuters Health, 2/4/05)
Dr. Ries Kranse, of Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam in
the Netherlands, and team, gave 37 prostate cancer patients
a mixture of dietary supplements (including antioxidants and
phytoestrogens) for 6 weeks and a placebo for another 6
weeks. The investigators found that when the subjects were
taking the supplements, they tended to experience a slowdown
or decrease in their levels of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA),
which is a biomarker for the cancer. Levels of the male sex
hormones that can fuel cancer growth dropped as well. These
findings suggest that dietary modifications could play an
effective role in preventing and treating prostate cancer.
