Study Finds
that Most Bone Growth Occurs at Night
(Chicago, Reuters Health, 1/27/05)
By placing sensors in the leg bones of lambs, Norman
Wilsman and Kenneth Noonan of the University of Wisconsin’s
School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison were able to
determine that 90% of growth occurs while the animals are
lying down. The scientists speculate that standing deters
growth by compressing the soft cartilage at the end of bones;
whereas, lying down decreases the pressure on these growth
plates and allows the bones to elongate.
