Health Tip:
Stop Urinary Tract Infections
(HealthDayNews, 2/16/05)
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) reports that every
year urinary tract infections (UTIs) result in nearly 10
million doctor visits. A particular type of bacteria, to which
women are more susceptible than men, causes most of these
infections. The NKF recommends reducing your risk of
developing this condition by:
- Drinking lots of fluids. Drinking 10 ounces of cranberry
juice daily may stop certain bacteria from attaching to the
urinary tract wall.
- Urinating when you feel the urge. Don't postpone going
to the bathroom.
- Wiping from front to back to avoid exposing the urinary
tract to intestinal bacteria.
- Cleaning the genital area daily, and before sex.
