Soda Before
Bedtime Raises Reflux Risk
(HealthDayNews, 5/10/05)
Dr. Ronnie Fass of the University of Arizona, Tucson, and
team, analyzed data from more than 15,000 participants in the
ongoing Sleep Heart Health Study. The investigators found a
link between consuming carbonated beverages near bedtime and
severe nighttime heartburn. They theorize that the carbon
dioxide in these beverages may cause stomach distension, which
contributes to this condition. They also found a relationship
between the regular use of sedatives containing
benzodiazepines and heartburn, which they say occurs because
such drugs may weaken the barrier between the esophagus and
stomach. The researchers note that acid reflux during sleep is
particularly damaging because the acid may lay in the
esophagus longer. The scientists recommend not drinking soda
late in the day and, where appropriate, changing sleep
medications.
