Smoking and
Salt Bad for Stomach Reflux
(NY, Reuters Health, 11/12/04)
Dr. M. Nilsson of the Karolinska Hospital in Stockholm, and
team, compared 3,153 people with gastroesophageal reflux, a
condition in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus,
to 40,210 people with no reflux symptoms. The investigators
found that smoking or consuming excessive amounts of salt
raised the risk of developing the condition; while drinking
tea or alcohol surprisingly did not increase the risk; and
eating high-fiber bread and exercising frequently appeared to
reduce the risk.
