Resveratrol
may have Anti-Flu Activity
(NY, Reuters Health, 5/23/05)
Dr. Anna Teresa Palamara of the Institute of Microbiology
in Rome and team, report that resveratrol, a substance found
in grapes, stopped influenza from replicating in cell
cultures. The investigators found that the resveratrol had the
most impact when introduced 3 hours after cells were exposed
to influenza and no effect after 9 hours. In addition, when
the researchers induced influenza in mice and then injected
some of them with resveratrol, the survival rate of the
animals rose by 40%, compared with mice injected with
placebos, and there was 98% less virus present in the lungs of
resveratrol-treated mice 6 days after infection.
