Queen of Herbs
The Star Online, 10/12/05

New research is confirming the healing powers of turmeric, a spice commonly used in Indian cooking.  Scientists have determined that curcumin, the yellow pigment in the plant’s root, is its main therapeutic agent.  The herb demonstrates both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and has been used traditionally for everything from bruises and colds to chronic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.  According to the Journal of Biological Chemistry (Dec 2004), elderly Indians, whose diet is rich in turmeric, have a low incidence of neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and researchers theorize that curcumin blocks beta amyloid plaques from forming on the brain. In addition, the B6 in turmeric may reduce homocysteine levels and the curcumin may prevent oxidation of cholesterol; thereby providing double protection against heart disease.
