Probiotics to
Ease Gut Problems in Autistic Young
(NOVIS, 5/5/04)
Professor Glenn Gibson of the University of Reading in the
UK, and team, found that the stool samples taken from 150
autistic children in the US contained a high prevalence of the
harmful bacteria, clostridia. In addition, the gut flora of 60
British autistic children showed high clostridia levels, which
the subjects’ non-autistic siblings did not have. These
findings suggest a link between autism and toxin-producing gut
bacteria, leading the researchers to speculate that probiotics,
the so-called “good bacteria, may help autistic children by
protecting them from neurotoxic intestinal microorganisms. |
