Mistletoe Extract May Treat Bladder Cancer
(NY, Reuters Health, 6/29/05)

Dr. Ursula Elsaesser-Beile of the University of Freiburg, Germany, and team, gave 30 patients with superficial bladder cancer a standardized water-based mistletoe extract six times weekly beginning about a month following surgery. The investigators found that, after a year, the recurrence rate in the 24 patients with pTa G2 and pT1 G2 tumors was only 33 % of that of comparable historical controls treated with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), a standard treatment. Whereas BCG can have serious side effects, there were none with the mistletoe treatment. These findings indicate that mistletoe extract may effectively reduce post-operative recurrences of bladder cancer.
