The Master Antioxidant--Glutathione (GSH)--
May Revolutionize the Treatent of Disease
(Ontario, GoodMedNews.com, April 2005)
Glutathione (GSH), a protein that is essential to cell
metabolism, also plays a strong role as an antioxidant and
defender against infection and environmental toxins. Dr. Jimmy
Gutman, formerly of McGill University in Montreal, cites
research that supports the benefits of GSH for a variety of
health conditions, including cancer, heart disease, stroke,
Alzheimer's, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. GSH, a
chain of three amino acids (a tripeptide), includes cysteine,
which tends to be inadequate in the North American food
supply. Recent research continues to demonstrate that GSH is
often deficient in patients with chronic disease and the
challenge is to supplement patients in ways that will make
supplies optimally available to their bodies for maintaining
health. A simple cysteine-rich protein extracted from milk may
hold the key by providing precursors that can make it from the
mouth to the intestines and into the cell walls, where the
body manufactures GSH. |
