Many Heart
Attack Patients Have Metabolic Syndrome
(HealthDayNews, 5/25/05)
Researchers at the University of Burgundy, in Dijon,
France, studied 633 people who had been hospitalized after a
heart attack. The investigative team found that nearly half of
the subjects had "metabolic syndrome," which the researchers
defined as having at least three of the following symptoms:
hypertension; elevated blood glucose; high blood triglyceride
levels; low HDL (good) cholesterol and a waist size larger
than 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women. These findings
are further evidence for the association between having
metabolic syndrome and the increased risk of heart problems.
