Low Cholesterol May Mean Poorer Mental
Powers
(NY, Reuters Health, 2/14/05)
Dr. Penelope K. Elias of Boston University, and
colleagues, examined the relationship between total
cholesterol and cognitive performance by analyzing data from
1894 adult participants in the original Framingham Heart
Study. The investigators found that naturally low
cholesterol levels (below 200 units) are associated with
impairment of cognitive abilities—including word fluency,
attention/ concentration and overall cognitive abilities.
The scientists say that this correlation makes because
“cholesterol is important in brain function.”
