High Blood Pressure Not Often Treated in Elderly
(Chicago, Reuters Health, 7/26/05)

Dr. Daniel Levy of the Framingham Heart Study in Framingham, MA, and fellow researchers, followed study subjects beginning in 1948, as well as their offspring who participated two decades later. The investigators found that three-quarters of Americans aged 80 and older are hypertensive, but many do not receive adequate treatment for this condition, raising their risk of heart attack and stroke. Normal blood pressure is defined as less than 120 mm Hg systolic (during heart contraction) and 80 mm Hg.diastolic (between contractions).
