Herbs,
Lifestyle Changes May Aid Prostate
(NY, Reuters Health, 11/10/04)
When the prostate gland becomes enlarged due to benign
prostate hyperplasia (BPH), it can put pressure on the
urethra, the tube through which urine flows, and lead to
bladder irritation. Now Dr. Harvey B. Simon, editor of the
Harvard Men's Health Watch, cites 18 studies that suggest that
the herb, saw palmetto, may alleviate BPH symptoms, including
excessive nighttime urination. The studies included nearly
3,000 men, aged 40 to 88. Simon also notes that behavioral
changes can ease BPH symptoms and suggests drinking less
fluids, avoiding alcohol and caffeine and urinating more
often.
