Green Tea May
Curb Prostate Cancer in Men at Risk
(Anaheim, CA, Reuters Health, 4/19/05)
Dr. Saverio Bettuzzi of the University of Parma in Italy,
and team, studied men with high-grade precancerous
intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), a condition that progresses
to invasive prostate cancer within a year in 30% of those
affected. The investigators gave the men either a placebo or a
daily dose of 600 mg of green tea catechins (GTCs),
antioxidant compounds found in green tea. One year later, 9 of
the 30 subjects in the placebo group had prostate cancer;
whereas only one man among 32 in the GTC group had developed
the condition. These findings suggest that GTC’s, as well as
other polyphenols, may protect against prostate cancer, even
in men with precancerous conditions. |
