'Good' Bacteria Help with Eczema in Infants
(Reuters Health, 4/8/05)

Dr. Mirva Viljanen of the University of Helsinki in Finland, and team, evaluated symptoms in 230 babies with eczema and possible milk allergies. The investigators mixed either Lactobacillus GG (LGG) alone, LGG plus three other probiotics or a placebo into the infants’ food. After 4 weeks, 120 of the babies were diagnosed with cow's milk allergy and the researchers found that LGG alone reduced symptoms for subjects sensitized to IgE, a type of antibody. Scientists speculate that LGG, a beneficial bacteria, may reduce allergy symptoms in infants with eczema.
